Whenever someone asks me what movie I think is underrated, I say this movie. Also whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is period.
I want to talk about this film because I don’t see a lot of buzz online about it. The show with the same title had traction, and overall usually has more presence than the movie. Don’t get me wrong, the show is amazing- but the film is a powerhouse of strong writing and comedy. I want to give it the spotlight “What We Do in the Shadows” deserves- flood the servers! Whenever I bring up “What We do in the Shadows” the main reaction I receive is confusion. “What’s What We do in the Shadows?” The usual response: “Oh, it’s this great movie. There’s these vampires and they live together in a flat it’s super funny. They’re also in New Zealand. And gay. Rhys Darby is a werewolf.”
The bare-boned concept of three vampires living in a flat is already comedic gold. These blood-suckers have been around for ages and haunted castles, but now they have to share bloody flats. My favorite scene showing the humor of them living together is at the very beginning when Viago (Taika Waititi) demands someone has to clean the pile of bloody dishes. Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) then says “Vampires don’t do dishes!”

The movie follows Nick (Cori Gonzales-Macuer) being turned into a vampire and his human friend in IT Stu (Stuart Rutherford) hanging with the vampire gang. Fun fact, Rutherford was not aware of his importance in the film and is actually and IT specialist. Cocky Nick annoy the vampires but they tolerate him partly because they love Stu. He shows them new technology and contrasts their pale faces with his bright reddness.

Overall, I love this movie and can’t recommend it enough. I wanted to share some cool bits, but maybe in the future I will do a more in-depth review. Thank you for reading!
